Zelensky appoints dealmaker PM after purge of tainted ministers

The Times, July 17, 2025

Yulia Svyrydenko, 39, the former economy minister, becomes the country’s second female premier and its second youngest in biggest wartime reshuffle

“She’s young, dynamic, and has experience having difficult talks with the US and other governments,” said Oleksiy Haran, a professor in politics at the Kyiv-Mohyla academy, the Ukraine’s leading university, and research advisor at the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundations. “She has experience with this agreement on critical minerals, which wasn’t easy.”

“The cabinet plays technical functions, but all the leadership, all the control remains in the hands of the president and his office, which creates, you know, some problems,” Haran said. “The new cabinet is not a strategic shift. Zelensky will continue to define policy.”
