Poll: level of support for Ukrainian independence remains stable

The level of support for the independence of Ukraine remains stable. As in 1991, it is nearly 90% in 2016.

Iryna Bekeshkina, the Director of the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation said this during the press conference on Monday.

"The opinion poll, which was conducted before the 1991 referendum, showed that 89% would vote for the independence, 11% would vote against. Those results greatly coincided with the real situation. Later, in 2006 and 2011, the number of those who would vote for the independence declined dramatically: 70% and 67%. Furthermore, the disturbing fact was that the number of those, who would support the independence and who would be against it, was almost equal in southern and eastern regions of Ukraine. That is, there was a large number of people in these regions who did not support the independence of Ukraine," Bekeshkina said.
